Reading App – Coming Soon

The second fundamental pillar of learning to read is reading 3 letter words.

Our first 3 apps teaches children 35 sounds found in phase 2 and phase 3 of the UK Primary National Strategy – Letters and Sounds.

Phase 2: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss

Phase 3: j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng

Once a child has learnt a few sounds such as s a t p i n – they can start to blend words such as: sat, pat, pin, sit, tap, tip…

When a child has learnt all 35 sounds they will be confident and ready to start reading. Children need to be able to hear and recognise sounds in order to read or spell a word.

It is best to start with 3 letter words. These are known as CVC words – consonant, vowel, consonant.

CVC words are easy for a child to decode. The child can segment the sounds in the word (by ‘sounding out’) and then blend the sounds together to say the word.Hip Hop Hen has devised a very simple CVC word app to help the child learn how to segment and blend 3 letter words such as h/-e/-n   d/-o/-g   c/-a/-t   b/-u/-g   p/-i/-g.

We have written masses of material at this stage – over 60 pages – to build up the child’s confidence to start reading, like the picture above ‘Ben Bug has fun.'

The app will feature Hip Hop Hen and her 6 friends – Ben Bug, Don Dog, Pip Pig, Sam Cat, Red Rabbit and Dan Duck.

The app will concentrate on learning the short-vowel sound in 3 letter words:

a as in cat

e as in hen

i as in pig

o as in dog

u as in bug
